Your Tulane Email is the official method of communication for all of your university related academic and professional interactions.
Students can access email using Tulane credentials at http://tulane.edu/email.
For communication to your instructor specifically relating to your Canvas course, Tulane recommends using the Canvas Conversations feature. All messages are saved in your Canvas inbox and are also sent to you via email.
Instructors may also share information and course updates through the course announcements page in Canvas. Course announcements are posted to the course and sent to students via email.
Update Canvas Notification Preferences
Notification Preferences allow users to select how and when they want to be notified when various events occur within a course. Notification settings are applied to all courses. Canvas users can choose how often they want to receive notifications.
First, set the ways you want to be notified. Canvas supports notification through email and SMS text message. Your account is automatically linked to your Tulane email.
If you want to receive notifications as text messages or on another email account, click on the Account icon in the global navigation menu on the left side of the Canvas interface. Then in Settings click the Add Contact Method on the right side of the screen.
Set Your Notifications
To set your notification preferences, click on the Account icon, then Notifications. Users have four notification options that can be applied to specific activities: Notify me right away, Send daily summary, Send weekly summary, Do not send me anything. These can be applied to actions within Course Activities, Discussions, Conversations, Scheduling, Groups and Alerts.
Email Awareness – Phishing and Fraud
Please be on alert for emails or messages that may request sensitive information.
Several Higher Ed Institutions have reported phishing emails that claim to be from the CDC, WHO, and/or other governing bodies containing references to COVID-19 and Coronavirus. These emails may contain malicious links or file attachments.
The Information Security team would like to encourage staff, students, and faculty members to take the following precautions:
- Avoid clicking links in unsolicited emails, chats, text messages, and be cautious of any email attachments, especially if the attachment prompts you to login or validate your credentials (username and password).
- If an email or email attachment prompts you for your username, password, or other information, please close the email and forward it to firstname.lastname@example.org so it can be investigated.
- It is recommended to reset your password if you haven’t reset it in the past 120 days. Please use a strong password and not one that has been used previously.
- Be wary of emails/chats requesting personal information such as phone numbers, address, banking information, or SSN.
- If the message or file you receive seems suspicious in any way, do not open it, and report it to email@example.com – The security team will be happy to assist.
